GOLDEN K SPONSORED CLUBS

We sponsor four community service clubs in different public schools, and co-sponsor a Kiwanis club of persons with disabilities. We describe these clubs as our Sponsored Programs. Sponsorship involves assisting the clubs with meetings, projects, transportation, and providing membership pins, banners, gavels, and other meeting items. The clubs provide members a way to volunteer their services to the community, and raise funds for donations to community needs.

Each club elects officers, names committees, holds regular meetings, performs projects, and generally operates as any regular Kiwanis club.

Here is a list of the Columbia schools with a Golden K sponsored service club:

* Smithton Middle School Builders Club

* Lange Middle School Builders Club

* Oakland Junior High School Builders Club

* Derby Ridge Elementary K-Kids Club

Our club for persons with disabilities is co-sponsored with two other Columbia Kiwanis clubs, the Columbia club, and the Boonslick club. We call this club the . . .

* Aktion Club

SMITHTON MIDDLE SCHOOL

The Builder's Club met at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1, in Trailer "D" at Smithton Middle School. Ten members were present; Harlan Hackett represented Golden K.

Kiwanis Pancake Day was announced. Members who will be in town will consider helping at this event. Another project for March is reading to Paxton Keeley Elementary kids, if a suitable time can be found.

Builders Club members are planning to participate in Clean Up Columbia Day on April 8.

Today's main activity was making Valentines for the VA hospital or one of the senior homes. Signs were also being made to solicit Valentines from others in the student body.

Nicole Erwin is planning to be our faculty advisor again next year. This is very good news! I gave her a copy of the CD ordered from KI which gives volumes of information.

This is a pretty smoothly-running Builder's Club. We will elect officers in May for next year.

Our next meeting date is March 1.

OAKLAND JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

The Builder's Club of Oakland Junior High School ended the 2006-07 year with a picnic at a shelter in a park adjacent to the school on Wednesday, May 23, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. They invited prospective members for the coming school year. Mrs. Stephanie Kane, Ms. Christine deLong and Mr. Bill Bishop, club advisors, arranged the picnic and accompanied the students to the park. Mr. Bishop grilled the hotdogs and hamburgers. The pictures below, taken and uploaded to this website by Lory Rugolo, document the picnic from the time the students left the assembly area in Room 023 until the acknowledgement awards at the closing minutes of the picnic.
